About Local Health and Safety Committees
The BC Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Safety Regulations require that the Life Sciences Centre establish and support a local Health and Safety Committee structure. Health and Safety Committees at UBC
According to University Policy #7 – “University Safety” – every administrative unit must have a Local Health and Safety Committee. Departments or Units may combine their committees where reasonable. These committees carry out the related responsibilities detailed in the Terms of Reference and make recommendations to management to ensure that the safety objectives of the University are being achieved. Health and Safety Committees at the Life Sciences Centre
The Health and Safety Committee structure at the LSC follows a basic floor-by-floor model – with some practical exceptions. Each floor within the facility has its own health and safety committee, known at the LSC as a Safety Implementation Committee (SIC). Each of these committees is populated by people who work on that particular floor. The overall role of these committees is to conduct safety committee practices – and implement LSC/UBC safety policies and procedures – on their respective floors.
The LSC Safety Steering Committee (SSC), populated by the chairperson of each SIC (and other selected representatives) – is the safety oversight and safety policy-setting body at the LSC. This committee deals with safety issues, polices and initiatives that affect the entire facility.

LSC Health and Safety Committee Minutes
Each LSC Safety Implementation Committee strives to meet monthly. The LSC Safety Steering Committee meets on a need-to basis; generally two or three times per year.
